From Baroque to Pampas
A journey from Bach’s timeless dance forms to Ginastera’s vibrant Argentinian landscapes.
Pianist Marina Radiushina and cellist Gabriel Martins in recital
The program opens with one of the most iconic works in the cello repertoire: Bach’s Cello Suite No. 1, whose flowing preludes and stylized dances have become a touchstone for performers and audiences alike. Mozart’s Violin Sonata in E Minor, K.304 (heard here in a cello transcription) follows with rare poignancy and dramatic tension, written during a time of personal loss. Ginastera’s Pampeana No. 2 then transports us to the wide horizons of Argentina’s pampas, where rustic dances and gaucho rhythms ignite a vivid musical landscape. Fauré’s charming miniature Papillon offers a moment of French lyricism before the program concludes with Brahms’s Cello Sonata No. 1, a stormy and deeply expressive masterpiece that crowns the journey with grandeur and intensity.
This journey is brought to life by Brazilian-American cellist Gabriel Martins, hailed by The Strad for his “flawlessly played… deeply moving” Bach and named one of Classic FM’s “30 under 30” rising stars. A laureate of the Sphinx Competition, the Tchaikovsky Competition for Young Musicians, and the Concert Artists Guild Grand Prize, Martins has appeared at Carnegie Hall, Wigmore Hall, and Ravinia Festival, earning acclaim for his rich, mesmerizing sound and compelling artistry.
He is joined by Ukraininan-American pianist Marina Radiushina, Artistic Director of the Miami Chamber Music Society and the Mainly Mozart Festival, whose leadership has brought world-class musicians to South Florida and created innovative platforms for chamber music. Radiushina’s artistry as a performer complements her visionary role as a curator, making her collaboration with Martins both a meeting of musical minds and a celebration of chamber music at its finest.
